International Travel

Setting: the potty (Reese is on it, not me)
Reese: where are you and Daddy going tonight, Mommy?
Me: to watch a movie
Reese: in the living room? (a fair question considering theater movies happen maybe twice a year around here)
Me: no, in a movie theater. You've never been to a movie theater
......
.....
.....
Reese: I've never been to Mexico.

True. Odd.

One more plant picture

I swear I will try not to put too many plant pictures up, but they do make good test subjects as I try to figure out how to use my camera.
The rain that moved in during our lake trip on Memorial Day weekend lasted five straight days...and it wasn't a simple drizzle...we're talking Indonesian Monsoon season. Here we were 10 days ago (5/20)
and here we are today (5/30) - use Owl for comparison
If you live anywhere near us and your house happens to be overtaken by tomatoes or zucchini, I take no responsibility. Consider yourself warned.

Makena's gymnastics "performance"

Here are a few shots from Makena's end-of-semester gymnastics "performance". I say "performance" because there was very little preparation, no rehearsing and minimal fanfare. They loved it! Brett took some video- I'll try to upload that soon.
She is the tiniest in her group- which secretly made her moves look much better than the others'.
Reese was practically a member of the class- the younger siblings all sat/played through the class with each other.

May Badin Lake trip

Yea!! The lake gets easier and easier for us with each passing summer! We've really got it down to a science now and we're taking advantage of Dayton and Debbie's generous offers to bring friends down. The downstairs setup makes an easy time of putting the kids down and still letting the grown ups (egad- are we grown ups??) stay up and drink and play cards...which is really all I did in college so I'll just pretend I'm not actually grown up.
This past Memorial Day weekend we had some sweet friends join us. Unfortunately, the sun made its final appearance at approximately 10am on Saturday. Oh well- we made the most of Saturday.
Bocce...Power Bocce, apparently
They decided this was the best way to get to Chick Fil A
Fishing
Reese's Dora fishing pole (and Makena's princess pole) are the hits of the summer! Reese is our consummate animal lover and had to kiss every fish she caught.
Makena is our consummate watermelon lover and kissed every piece of watermelon she ate. There was much smooching going on.
This is what happens when we let them go without naps + water + friends + pseudo sun =

The end of the school year...

We celebrated (mourned) the end of the preschool year last week with a party at a local park. IT was overcast and storms threatened all day long (and Reese still managed to get sunburned). We will sorely miss Ms. Michelle, Ms. Betty, Ms. Shari and Ms. Amy!!

Our gardening experiment

For the past four summers I have said I wanted to plant a vegetable garden in our back yard. My 2005 excuse was "I'm pregnant". 2006: "pregnant again". 2007: "I have a 2-year-old and a 9-month-old". 2008: "........" (translation: "I'm lazy"). Well, here we are in 2009 and we have finally gotten our acts together and- better yet- everything is growing! We've already harvested and eaten three heads of Bibb lettuce. We're going to have entirely too many tomatoes, the bell peppers are thriving, and the cucumbers appear to be plotting to take over the entire street.
I know plant pictures can only be so interesting....so skip them if you want to.
This picture was taken May 10..
This one was taken 10 days later. (note that Owl is finally earning his keep around here)
A budding bell pepper and its flower
A cucumber flower- this is the innocent face of the cucumber plant
See the swirly little tendril curled up in the center of this picture? Yeah- that's the true personality of the cucumber plant. It's just waiting to wrap its sneaky little self around something and strangle it. One of those had hold of one of my jalapeno plants today. Little did the cucumber know where my loyalties lie.
I just like this picture- looking under and between two rows of plants.
And this is our pear tree that should have died at least twice by now. The drought has claimed about 3/4 of it and we have the dead, bare, spikey limbs sticking up 25 feet in the air to prove it. But, amazingly, some of it is still living and this year we may even get edible fruit again!

"This little piggy" via Cliffs' Notes

This one went to market.
This one didn't.
This one had a muffin. (??)
This one didn't.
This one cried.

~Makena

I'm starting to believe that maybe I should actually have read The Red Badge of Courage, Billy Budd, The Scarlet Letter...the list goes on...instead of relying on the Cliffs' Notes in high school. Clearly there are details that get lost in translation.

A graduation of sorts

We took the rails off of Reese's bed about a week ago. I had thought we'd just wait until she turned 3, a relatively arbitrary landmark, but a Saturday's worth of way too much sugar forced our hand. I'll spare you the details, but just let this serve as a warning to you- if you limit your kids' sugar intakes on a regular basis, that one day you say "what the heck, drink lemonade, eat cookies and birthday cake and ice cream" you will be in for a very long night. The resulting state of her bedrails required us to let her try sleeping without them. She did just fine- she's actually been asking to get rid of them for a few months. I have to admit...the "graduation" aspect of this would appear to be a milestone in her life...but the reality is that I am the one who gets to celebrate not having to change sheets while fighting with rails anymore!

We are staring down the barrel of the end-of-preschool gun this week. Strangely, I'm actually excited about it. We have a plethora of things to do, people to see and places to go and...best of all...the back yard is still their favorite place to be! Between the swingset, baby pool, batting tee and our new garden (post coming soon), they're perfectly thrilled to hang out at home. Meals outside still have an exciting quality to them so we make the most of it. If you're ever walking past our house and see us outside- come join us!

Batter up, hear that call....

Woohoo!! Backyard bombers! We haven't really decided who's going to hit cleanup yet- Makena has the power but Reese's form is better. (I think it's worth commenting on Makena's look of utter boredom in the background of Reese's pictures and Reese caught mid-sneeze in the background of Makena's pictures)
